Tucked away in The Camden Tup, Anterior are filling up on good ol’ beer - what else? - and chilling out before they go on stage supporting Dying Fetus. Soundshock went to talk about feather boa’s, mullets and ‘Kettle Metal’ and discover the joys of shitting in a box.
When you first started out did you ever think something would happen for you guys or were being professional musicians something you were all determined to make something happen for yourselves?
Luke: When we started out it was more, I think, same as a lot of bands, as more of a hobby. When you start getting older you got to make the choice whether you want to turn it in to a career. There’s a lot of effort that’s got to be put in. You’ve got to want it. You’ve got to say yes, I want a career otherwise you’re going to become a mediocre pile of shit!

Have you got a particular process for writing music?
Luke: The last album was pretty much composed be Leon, the guitar player. As far as writing riffs and that goes, some of the riffs are recorded at a home studio then you’ll work off a laptop for a while.
Have you got a song you are particularly proud of writing?
Luke: Well the album as a whole we’re pretty proud of writing. So if you’re going to press me for one song…‘The Silent Divide’ is a big hit, you know?

You have been getting some rave reviews. Has the positive media coverage been encouraging?
Luke: It is encouraging. If you went through life getting put down all the time and every review was shit - “you’re shit, you’re bad” - ok, you’d probably look at things differently, you know? Reviews don’t bother me that much. The only review that matters to me is the person that comes over and says, ‘I like the record’.
As time has gone on have you found that writing songs and performing together has become easier or do you still have to work at it?
Luke: I think it’s become easier. I think you can practise in a room together for fucking months but gigging practise is where you shine. Your confidence goes up a lot then as well.
What’s the best show you’ve played so far?
Steven: Bodom. Luke: The Children Of Bodom shows were…As far as crowds go, they were the biggest. They were the best, I think. They were just going wild, which was fantastic.
Who would you like to play with?
Steven: Shirley Bassey! That would be fucking epic!
You would g out there with a nice sparkly feather boa?
Steven: Fuck yeah! I’d get well involved! Luke: Arch Enemy, In Flames, W.A.S.P. I’d fucking love that! Strapping young lad…
Doesn’t look like that will happen now…
Luke: No, I think Devin’s lost the plot a bit now, hasn’t he? But he keeps going. He’s like, fucking fifty! Steven: And he’s bald.
So you’ll stop if you go bald?
Luke: Fuck no! I’d a have a sick-ass mullet!
What do you do on tour to stay sane?
Luke: Well, we were really lucky that we had out own smaller bus. We had out own smaller space for what we wanted to do. You could get up at four o’clock and shit in a box. We all got on really well. You have to, to see a man squatting over a box, otherwise it’s not going to work, is it? Yu may as well call it a day!
Where do you plan to be this time next year?
Steven: Headlining Download! Luke: There’s a new album in the works for next year. A realistic goal would be good gigs with good crowds.

Your MySpace page says, ‘Post-industrial Vegetarian Trip-hop Black metal‘. What is that?
Luke: It’s changed weekly to something more ridiculous. ‘Kettle metal’ was one.
Metal you can drink your tea to?
Luke: Exactly. I really enjoy what I’m doing. As long as I enjoy something I’ll be happy with it.
