Many metal fans will have got as far as glancing briefly at the back sleeve of ‘Plagues’ before choking on their malteaser’s and throwing the CD down in disgust. An exaggeration perhaps, but the use of song titles such as ‘HTML Rulez D00d’ and ‘You Can’t Spell Crap Without “C”’ is hardly going to do The Devil Wears Prada any favours. Then again, anyone who’d title these bruising songs in such a ludicrous manner in unlikely to give a shit. Luckily for them, it is their music that truly does the talking, and ‘Plagues’ the young crew have as assured a sophomore effort as you’re likely to hear this year.

Sure, these Ohio Bible-bashers are nowhere near the level of other metalcore acts such as scene newcomers The Black Dahlia Murder or even the more commercially-accessible Killswitch Engage, but their own blend of death metal riffage and furious hardcore breakdowns (tinged, of course, with sappy singalong moments) is still well worth the time of day from those who can go beyond their evident lack of self-seriousness. The occassions when they lean closer to the hardcore aesthetics of their sound, such as during the punkier ‘Don’t Drink And Drance’, are particular highlights on an album that doesn’t push the envelope so much as firmly seal it.
