With the likes of Municipal Waste, Evile, Testament, Machine Head and, perhaps most surprisingly, Metallica putting thrash firmly back on top of the heavy metal pecking order as of late, the time couldn’t be better for the return of Liverpool bruisers S.S.S. (that’s Short Sharp Shock for those not in the know). Of course, the lads from up North have hardly been away, but that’s no excuse for not getting stuck into ‘The Dividing Line’, which manages to cram 20 songs and 2,000 riffs (give or take) into the space of just over half an hour.
S.S.S. maybe well be the most aptly named metal band out there right now, as each song manages to explode into life, thrust itself firmly into your consciousness and finally explode back out of existence in a fraction of the time it takes Sunn0))) to tune up their instruments. Far from being a flash in the pan fancy, if anything this only emphasises the immense musical ability that guitarist Pete Broom, bassist Mark Magill, drummer Dave Ferguson and saucily-monikered vocalist Foxy are all able to wield at will. Thrash metal is at a new-found height of awesomeness right now, and S.S.S. already have the podium in their sights.
