So we’re used to female led metal these days what with the myriad bands from Scandinavia doing that pseudo operatic thing they do and then Arch Enemy who are in a league of their own. However with Floridians Devils Gift we have a seeming mixture of the two. Vocalist and Suicide Girl Lennon Murphy (who is apparently being sued by a certain Yoko Ono for use of her name) sings cleanly with attitude and conviction yet also manages to belt out a decent death growl/scream to add to the dynamics of the band. Not quite as brutal as Angela Gossow but certainly impressive nonetheless. The band itself is also a bit left of centre – metal but not quite yet still very raw and heavy. Victim has a riff you’d never expect from a death metal band but still works in terms of the song. However, opener Looking For Jesus is a hit single in waiting – heavy enough for people who aren’t afraid of Arch Enemy but with all sung vocals for the less faint of heart. A veritable crossover of accessible metal and more traditional death metal which isn’t contrived at all (except the tired lyrical subject matter but who cares about that when the music’s this good?) The rest of the album is pretty much the same; seeking to hit on a middle ground between heaviness and accessibility with big choruses but plenty of cymbal crashing, solos and screaming to admittedly good success. If you like Arch Enemy then you’ll probably like this. If you like Killswitch Engage then you’ll probably like this. See where I’m going? It’s a universal metal album.
