Another day, another exciting new thrash band to mull over. Brazilian riff-lords Violator have arrived on the scene to unleash ‘Chemical Assault’ – a move that sees the quartet throw themselves wholeheartedly into the seemingly endless pit of retro metal acts that have inundated the US and Europe as of late. Of course, it is nigh on impossible to study a Brazilian thrash act without mentioning a certain Mr Cavalera, but we’ll try to stay away from such predictability for now.

While Violator are nothing like predictable themselves, they do lack a certain individuality that other newcomers such as Gama Bomb and Evile have managed to attain. This takes nothing away from ‘Chemical Assault’ though, which is an effective A to Z on classic Bay Area thrash aesthetics, from the shout-along choruses to the inevitable tempo changes right down to the nuclear lyricism. All in all, it is a solid enough debut release from a band that may well have much to prove as thrash continues its own infectious takeover.
